Just got 27 columbian chickens today!!! I have 5 banties that are a lot of fun and talked to a farm research manager at the university of Illinois (U of I). Brooder is all set up and they seem to be doing O.K. Have never even heard of this style chicken but he claims that they are a great layer and are a hardy bird. Nothing gained and nothing lost so I tried them. We will see how they do. What is another opinion? I am hoping for the best. When a person gets chicks they are cute and my two foster kids are going to be in for a treat when they get home. My 15 year old son actually bought them and since I got my banties just for fun he has taken a intersest in chickens and hopefully will learn something from this.

Oh chicken raising is a challenge in so many ways, but it's much fun and what a beautiful breed too, enjoy them!

Here's some info I found at Mccmurry hatchery website. Columbian Wyandottes are an unusual and attractive variety. They have the same deep, well rounded bodies and close set comb of all Wyandottes, and are of medium size. Appearance is handsome with white bodies, and contrasting neck, tail, and wing plumage which are black with silvery white edging. Their nice yellow skin and plump bodies make them easy to dress and they lay brown eggs. The hens make excellent setters and mothers. This variety was first exhibited at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, and got their name in that way. Baby chicks are a creamy white and some have dark gray shading on the back.

Good luck to you!

Columbian is a color variety...not a breed. Several breeds come in the columbian coloring. Do you know what breed yours are?
