It is getting to that time...when the chickens are separated into the 'keepers' and the 'dinners'. We've watched for admirable traits in our young roos to decide who we will keep and who we will eat... but what about the columbians? I ordered 2. I received 4. One we picked out as a chick and named. Scuttle is a keeper, male or female. But that is the problem. We don't know its gender. ANY of their genders. The whole flock will be 4 months old next week, and all the others (except the silkies who are also immune to the axe) have declared their gender.
What ARE the columbians? I look at combs and wattles, but some hens have more color and development than they, and some roos have less. I look at behavior, but all my Wyandottes except Gengis, a SLW, are so mellow. I look at their tails, but Wyandottes don't have much tail to speak of and there is no color difference between gender in columbians.
What do I do?
Advice says to process the roos NOW but I can't just GUESS.
