Comb concerns

My black australorp hen has a black comb. It's shape is not unusual for a hen but the black has me wondering. Is this common? Also, will the condition of the comb indicate whether she is ready to start laying? Good chickie.

If the comb gets larger and red she will be getting ready to lay. One of my black stars has dark pigmentation along the top of her comb too.
