Yesterday my daughter discovered one of our birds had her comb ripped partially off. We have no idea what happened or how. It was ripped from the back and hanging over/in her eye and her head was covered in blood. It was still actively bleeding. There was much panic and I wasn't sure what to do. After looking online, we ended up:
1. pouring lots of water over her head to clean off the wound and see it better.
2. We then sprayed it down with Vetericyn antimicrobial poultry care
3. Tried to dry it with a paper towel. That wouldn't work. It kept bleeding.

The part of her comb hanging was already a greyish color and not pink. I was worried about infection so we got very sharp scissors, disinfected them and cut off the part that was torn. We sprayed it with more Vetericyn and I ended up putting BleedStop/Wound stop powder on it to get it to stop bleeding and scab. She was quarantined for a few hours for it to dry. She acted perfectly normal and handled everything great.

We put her back w the birds and monitored her the rest of the day and had no issues. No other birds paid her any attention or pecked at her.

Today, she is behaving normally, but my daughter saw small yellow specks around the wound and is very worried. She asked if it's pollen and I wonder if it's just dust or something? But I want feedback to make sure it's ok. I took a few pictures

I would keep it clean and put some antibiotic ointment on it to keep it from drying out while healing.

Do the specks come off if you clean the area? Some are more on her face so that's why I am asking?

My Buff Orpington did the same thing, stuck her head through the chicken wire for a tasty bug, and ripped the back half of her comb off on the way back in. I did not remove the ripped part, just cleaned her up with saline then Vetricyn. Try putting antibiotic ointment (without pain relief) on it too, that would help. She should heal fine.

That's a good question - I should use some water and a cloth to see if I can wipe the ones on her face away easily. I don't know why I didn't think to do that. I need to go grab ointment, too. Didn't add any initially because I read to let the wound powder dry and scab and I thought it might prevent the drying.

Thank you!

Thank you so much! I hate that this happened to your bird, too, but it's comforting to know all went well with yours. I considered leaving the ripped part, but it was hanging so low that I didn't. I doubted my decision afterwards, but I'm just making myself not second guess it.

Maybe the blood stop powder.. the one I have for doggie toenails is yellow like that.

ETA: I had a duck completely scalped by a raccoon that healed up without any treatment beyond the initial cleaning you've already done.
Thank you for sharing. It's helping me be much less anxious!

She’ll be just fine 🙂

I wonder if it's just some of the powder that has absorbed some moisture and changed color?

Ointment with no pain meds in it as another person mentioned.

Hope she has a full recovery!
