We were having some rooster induced baldness, but an outdoor snuggle with good lighting and phone makes me worried that something else is going on. There is some paleness underneath the top and also some muddy bits that don't brush off.

Looks like rooster damage from mating when they grab hold of the back of the neck. How old is the rooster and how many hens do you have with him? I would consider separating him in a pen for awhile to give her a break. Hens may also peck at the feathers, so you might want to coat her bare area with something like Nustock Cream, Pine Tar (both in the horse section of feed stores or online. BluKote can stain it purple blue, and may hide the bare spot. Even Vicks or something similar might keep them from pecking at it.

It's not the back of the head so much as comb. The spot seems more obvious in person. Semi translucent yellow halfway down left tip
Combined with the dark spots that don't brush off and it isn't frostbite season.

We are a bit low on ladies, and none of hens are in a submitting mood, but he now has 3 new pullets to court bringing him up to 9 total.

And this morning the boy's crow is weak.
Of course I am going out of town for 2 weeks next week ...
