I have a long horn who has a HUGE comb. The tips of his comb are turning black. There has not been any cold nights yet so it's not frostbite. I've heard of people having to trim the comb of the rooster's comb. What's going on and what is trimming a comb process?????

Can you post a picture? Sometimes a large comb may darken on the tips or toward the back due to excitement, or a change in temperature. As long as the comb color improves, there usually isn’t a problem. Sometimes the comb may darken due to a heart or breathing problem from a lack of oxygen.

He is 2 years old now. Also he was attacked by a fox about 4 months ago and has been healing from that. He has some permanent scars on his comb from teeth marks.

He looks fine, I wouldn’t trim the comb, that would cause a lot of trauma. In the fall and winter sometimes their combs do not look like they do in the spring and summer. He looks OK to me so far. I would just leave it be for now. My girls have really shriveled up combs right now because they are molting. The combs return back to normal after they are done.
