Does the size of the comb have anything to do with how high the chicken is in the peaking line or is it just different breeds of chickens have bigger combs?

Glad you joined us!

A larger comb does usually mean a bird is dominant and high in the pecking order. It is also a sign of good health and egg production.

Comb size varies with each breed, so there are exceptions to the larger comb=higher rank rule. For example, Wyandottes have rose combs, which will never be as large as a single comb. Despite that, I have several Wyandottes that clearly rank above larger single-combed birds.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

BantamLover X2 Combs do vary quite a bit from breed to breed. But many times within a particular breed, the larger combed birds can be the flock leaders. Not always, but more commonly than not.

Good luck and enjoy your flock!

Welcome to BYC, again! I just greeted you on another New Member Introduction thread. :o) BantamLover21 answered your question very nicely so I'll just say, good luck with your flock.

So glad you joined.

Good question, thank you for asking. I wanted the answer also. My best layers also have larger combs and wattles than the 2 frequently broody ones and figured it was just better hormones. And the top girl has the largest of all. But didn't see this difference until they were approaching a year old.
