HEllo! I have a handful of 6 week olds that will soon join my 1-2 year old flock. I'm wondering how to feed them once they join the flock. I was always told not to let them have layer feed until much later

My preference is to feed Purina Flock Raiser.. with oyster shell free choice on the side for active layers.

A grower or all flock would also be okay. Anything with at least 18% protein and around 1% calcium. Juveniles may sample the oyster shell but they won't be getting it in every bite of feed.

Since making the switch after I learned layer is a minimum.. my older birds enter molt less harsh and return to lay more rapidly.. keeping their personality in tact instead of becoming withdrawn as in years past.

I feed the Purina Flock Raiser to all birds.. chicks, broody's, rooster, layers, juveniles.. the hen clearly notice the difference in protein levels and enjoy eating it. It's the amino acid content that really helps support feather growth and the immune system.

It is true that excess calcium and deficient protein/amino acids fed to juveniles could stunt growth, delay the onset of lay, and even cause kidney issues.

Hope this helps! :fl
