Sorry, the lame title was to get your attention! ;) This probably won’t be “exciting stuff” so feel free to back away slowly!

Anyways, our little D'Uccle got sick and passed the other day and we want to replace her with another bird. We really like the Polish/Houdan birds and have a nearby breeder that sells them. Problem is, we can only have one more bird added to the flock, but I’ve heard that it’s better to have more than one of the crested birds. Is this true? We would love one, but we would rather have a happy bird! Is it possible to keep only ONE? Thanks for the input!

Also, I have an INCREDIBLY boyish 3 week old cockerel (yes, we can tell! The people of BYC have spoken!) that I’m afraid will start crowing soon!!! When do they start? I’ve heard 4, 8, 10 weeks... not sure what to expect! What are your experiences with crowing age?

Thanks everyone!

P.S. Hopefully I posted in the correct forum...? I figure this is kind of behavior stuff, right??

How old are all the birds you have?
How old is the new bird?
Integration can be tricky, especially with a single bird, especially especially with single bird with weird 'hair'.
If you "can only have one more bird", I'd guess you might be tight on space?
Integration works best with extra space.

Our birds are 3 weeks right now. We would be getting it when they are 5-6 weeks. Including the new bird. These birds are very nice to each other but I guess that’s because they know each other already. But they would still be pretty young so could it work? I said we only have room for one more because I give them more space each but technically going by the rules we could have room for two more, they would just be a bit more crowded... and I would rather they weren’t!

All of my roosters were pretty late bloomers. My BO started crowing at around 5 months, my EE at 6, and my polish at 6 as well.

All right thanks! Guess we’ll just see how it goes!
