Before reading, this may not work with smaller chicks or chicks with very severe splay leg.

Opening Introduction
.
Hello everybody! Though i am rather new to the forums and raising chickens, i have managed to find out many little tips and tricks to help out my two, one week old chicks. They both were assisted hatched and each have their own little handicap.
Anyway, today, i'll be just sharing my experience with splay/spraddle leg.
.
.
.
What Was Tried
.
As many, my first attempt to assist this chick was to use a bandaid...though, after sometime, the chick started to teach herself how to hop rather than walk. Also, replacing the bandaid was time consuming and stressful on her. I tried 1/8 inch tape and everything but nothing was comfortable on the poor girl. The adhesive part of the tape also slightly irritated her leg..
.
.
.
The solution (finally)
.
Two Loom bracelet bands and and a piece of stretch cord/string. Thats all that I used..haha!
.
.
.
How to make it.
.
Double loop each individual band so its half its original size. This part will go around the chicks foot. It should be large enough to slide up and down the chicks ankles to allow natural leg movement but not slide off thw chicks foot.
.
Tie the stretch cord or string tightly to the rubber band. Then, making sure there's a little more than an INCH of space, tie the stretch cord/string to the second band.
.
After double knotting snd tightening the stretch cord/string, cut off the excess...
.
Slide one foot in one band and the other in another band..kind of like little chicken cuffs. The end result should look like this
.
rtably now, scratch her beak, run with her sister, squat, and still keep jer legs from falling into a split! Best of all, its easily removed.
.
Its been almost a week and she's doing wonderfully!
.
I hope this helps.
