Those stupid squirrels are everywhere out here! My kids wouldn't believe they were actually squirrels when we first moved out here to the CA desert because there are no tree so where the heck were they all living?

There's a community up in Illinois (either Olney or Elgin; can't remember which!) that has a large number of pure white squirrels. They are absolutely STUNNING! There's a hefty fine for capturing or injuring one, too. When we were visiting friends in Colorado, we went up to their cabin in the Red Feather Lakes area. Gloria had put out feed for the birds & chipmunks (which, BTW, were what I always thought were "ground squirrels"), when my gaze shifted to a nearby picnic table and what I thought was a large black cat. When it moved closer, I realized it was a solid black squirrel, and a BIG one at that!

It was gorgeous!!! The only kind I've seen in this region have been the standard gray ones and the red or "fox" squirrels.

I'm use to the regular old grey squirrels and the red fox squirrels. But I remember seeing the pure black looking ones when I was stationed at Great Lakes, IL years ago. I just assumed they were a grey squirrel version that had adapted it's coat color to absorb heat, since they got a lot of cold and snow up there

There is a section of country near Charleston SC that has a strain of white squirrels also; I almost drove off the road the first time I saw one. It's past James Island, maybe Wadmalaw?
