Years ago I remember reading that the best commercial chicken is Bell and Evans, and that's what I always buy . (It's supposedly raised in better conditions than others.) Now that I'm a backyard chicken person (egg chickens, not meat, so far) I got curious to know more and I went to their website. They have a 6 minute video explaining their practices and showing how their chickens are raised. It doesn't answer every question one might have, and in fact raised more for me, but was pretty impressive - nothing like the horrible films I've seen of deplorable chicken conditions.
It is amazing to think how many chickens have to be hatched, raised, transported and slaughtered every day to feed us all!
The video started with the eggs, but it left me wondering about how the mother chickens mate - do they let them run around with hundreds of roosters? or is it artificial insemination?
