Hi all after a bit of advice. I am looking for company for my female indian runner duck. She has always lived with another indian runner duck (which sadly was killed a few months back) and my ex battery hen. Sadly my hen died yesterday and daisy my duck is not happy at all.

I am wanting to know is it best for me to get the same sex or opposite to keep her company. Also i am more then likely going to get a couple should i stick to the same sex or it doesnt matter. Her and my chicken have been so close since donald died and she is not happy at all. I just want to get it right so she doesnt get more upset.

Thanks in advance

Becky

Hi and

So sorry about the loss of your duck and now your hen, I bet Daisy is very sad since she has bonded with 2 mates that have died and now she needs some new friends, You know it's up to you as far as what sex to get. If you want ducklings then get 1 drake and another female, but don't get a drake and a female that have been together already or poor Daisy will probably not be welcomed into their flock. If you just want eggs then get more females. They will all be best buds in time and you want have to deal with an over sexed drake [which sometimes happens] not always though. I have drakes along with ducks and for the most part life is good. The boys do like their girls though so you deff want to make sure you have more than 1 duck if you decide on getting a drake. Actually it should really be 3-4 ducks to 1 drake. Good luck on your decision and keep us updated.

Oh, not good news about your loss, and your single duck. I would lean toward getting another female or two. They seem easier to introduce from what I have read, than groups involving drakes. There are always exceptions, though. I introduced two females to my all female flock and it worked out well.
