compared store eggs to home-grown eggs and...

My Husband baked a cheesecake with our first eggs we good, and he used the same amount of eggs like eggs from the store. But the eggs from our chicken have a lot more flavor, so the cake just was tasting like eggs.
I like our own eggs better :)

If the chickens are just fed feed from the feed store and can't get out and find their own food the eggs are going to taste the same as store bought eggs.

Were the difference comes in is if the chickens have a natural diet of grass, bugs, and any small animal they can catch and kill... then you get dark orange, thick, richly flavored yolks. Other wise the only thing you are gaining by raising your own chickens for eggs is that you know what your chickens are eating (you know they aren't being fed hormones or antibiotics which you will get trace amounts coming out in the eggs you eat) and you know they are being cared for in a much more humane way.

Well I always found our hens eggs looked and tasted really different.
Darker yolk and a stiffer white, not runny like a store egg. That's because it's just laid.
Same with the way they taste, far richer and EGGier. That's because it's just laid.

Gotta wonder how freshly laid your friends' eggs were that you got.
Nothing, I mean nothing, like getting one that is still warm from being laid.

I don't know where you are located BUT I live in Jersey (as my handle states) and it's been bloody horribly hot here. Temps in and over 100 every day for the last two weeks. We have hens who are raising babies so right now we only have two older hens that are still laying that aren't tied up being Moms. I do believe that heat and humidity take their toll on hens and their eggs.

Just my .02

I definitely prefer my hens eggs over store eggs. I havent bought store eggs in over a year. And hopefully never have too. I notice a difference in yolk color and the yolk stands taller the shells are thicker and I have an egg basket filled with a rainow of colors(cant beat that). I think the biggest differance is when chickens are allowed to free range as opposed to being caged with only layer pellets available to them. The more greens, bugs and kitchen scrap(fruits and veggies) the chickens eat the richer the eggs will be. I will always prefer my own homegrown eggs because Im proud Im raising my own food.

Also the difference between store eggs and fresh eggs is much more pronounced if you consume the fresh eggs before they are 7 days old. The fresher, the better. My experience with some fresh eggs from a chicken farmer was not so great. I saw the difference, but not much change in flavor. Once I got some fresh eggs from my own backyard, the difference was like a 'fresh' tomato at the store vs. one from your backyard.

Eat an egg less than 5 days old and the flavor is outstanding.
