Hello all. I need some advice. I have a broody who was sitting on 6 eggs. 2 hatched on day 19 today day 21 she has been out of the house all day with her new chicks and has left the other eggs. I do not have an incubator so have put them, because they were cold, in a heated seedling tray with cover. I have put a saucer of water in there and a thermometer. The current temperature is 103 degrees. |Will the remaining eggs survive I wonder? Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks.

Have you candled the eggs to see if they were developing? 103*F is a tad too hot for them. 100*F to 101* would be better. Check if the eggs are viable by candling them and by holding them against your ear and gently tapping them with your fingernail. If there is a live chick in there you should hear a responding tap, cheep or some sounds.

Any developments? We had our first eggs hatch under a broody on 14th June. So exciting. Hope they hatch for you x

I have candled them 2 seem non-viable the other 2 dark shadow but no sound at all.

I had the same Problem 9 eggs 6 hatched with out a problem and the other 4 1 rotten, 1 dead, and the other 1 was quite early and dident have enough time to hatch out before the others did so the mother hen took the 6 chicks out to feed and drink and left the other 3 eggs cold so we had the same thing we do not have an icubator either so we took the 3 eggs out and found th erotton and the dead one and carefully helped the chick out of the shell but it was to weak and undeveloped to survive so what i would suggest is if you have a heat lamp or another broody you could maybe keep them under them other wise i would just try to work out the dead one's from the alive ones and then maybe try to help the chick out of the shell half way and then let it work it's own way out and if it looks well enough then after reintroduce it to the mother hen hope this helps Good Luck :)

also i for got to tell you that i also did not hear any noise from the chick untill i startedd to help it out

It hasn't even pipped yet though I would be too worried that I might do more damage. However I cant get the temperature right so it will probably die also I have had to take the lid off to lower temperature and I know that all humidity will reduce so I don't know what else to do.

Do you have another broody ?

No unfortunately. The eggs are still in the heated seedling box I don't hold out much hope really but we will see. I will have to get an incubator. I just wanted an extremely broody hen (4 times this year) to have her needs met. Its very stressful but she is as happy as larry with her new chicks. Im the one pacing the floor hahaha.
