Hi everyone,

After a long time debating I have made the plunge ready to buy some Chickens. Is there any one breed better than the other?

If anyone has any advice they would like to pass on, maybe let me know things I am letting myself in for and things I will need that I may not have thought about I would be so grateful.

Many thanks and I am sure I will be asking loads more in the near future

It depends what you want the chickens for? If you want good egg layers then a battery breed of hen would be ideal, if you want pretty ones and are not so worried about eggs then it is just a personal choice, there is a thread somewhere on here that shows most breeds chickens so just hqve a look and see what you like, welcome to byc

I recommend the Learning Center, great reading and will help you a lot. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

I have some advice, being a newbie myself - we just got our flock in mid-April, they were 6 weeks at the time.

First - be prepared to adore them. I was all 'yeah, chickens, whatever - just here for the eggs', but I am so smitten with them. I have totally taken over caring for them === after warning my husband for months that if HE wanted chickens then HE would have to be the one doing all the work.

Second - do some research on culling, and try to decide what method you'll use prior to getting the birds. Things happen, sometimes quickly, and take my word for it - it's NO fun to realize you have a sick bird on your hand and you don't know how you'll take care of things. We learned this the hard way earlier this week. We did not handle things as well as we could have, if we'd been prepared.

Good luck!
