When I lived in upstate NY I used to see coyotes all the time, along the throughway of all places. The problem with these critters is that they are adaptable, smart, rapid breeding, and unafraid of humans. They are like foxes in that they are even found in urban areas. They are also known to interbreed with feral dogs. They are one of the few predators, or even animals that's range has expanded in the 20th century. I don't know of any place in the US that they are protected and I think many western states still have bounties.
