Hi all,
Unfortunately my first post is a sad one but I am hoping I might get some feedback on perhaps what might have gone wrong.
Minxy my 4 year old 3/4 Australorp has suffered on and off from egg peritonitis. It got to the point, we decided we wanted to try surgery to clean out her uterus completely and give her a fighting chance. As we all know surgery on chickens is very risky but we had to try. Surgery went well and a revolting egg was removed and she survived the hardest part. 5 days in hospital but improving bit by bit each day. Home she came to be with her sisters and she was getting stronger, putting on weight, talking, even running to greet me (even without treats). Anti-inflammatories & antibiotics daily. I thought she was safe. Sadly one week after being home, suddenly she developed a hack & seemed to strain to breath intermittently, but was happily mobile, eating well, doing her usual chicken business. The vet suggested try different antibiotics, which we picked up and were to start the next morning. Sadly Minxy didn't make it through the night. So sudden I can't explain what went wrong. Does anyone have any suggestions how this happened so suddenly after being such a strong fighter up until then? We are just devastated by this tragedy.
