place dry leaves about 1 foot deep under the roost ( box in the roost to keep the leaves piled). add new leaves weekly or as needed to keep litter dry and control odors. chickens will work the leaves and turn them over and over. within 90 days or less, you will have pulverized rich compost for the garden without the "heat" often associated with poultry manure. follow this procedure all year; it is especially effective during the summer fly season.

I have a similar system but I use pine shavings instead and only about 4 inches. I only have 6 birds though and I swear they try to hold it until they get out to the run. That is a great idea though, is that what you do?
