Concerns about automatic chicken door

Wow...really??? Our door closes fairly slowly. I couldn't imagine how that would happen. Does your door close quickly?? Is yours adjustable (or can you modify it somehow) to make it close slower???

We have ours set for about 1/2 hr AFTER it gets dark. I feel that is safe, most nocturnal animals wouldn't be around just yet. I've only seen them late at night, middle of the night. I think that 1/2 hr after dark is safe, especially if you have a fenced in run, which I have. That gives everybody time to get in and "situated" for the night. Besides, our door closes slowly that they would have time to get either in or out, whichever. Perhaps your girl was looking out when it happened if it wasn't completely dark? I have NEVER had that happen. Now watch, it'll happen to me!

Yeah, She was looking out when it happened. I believe it was close to a full moon so it was pretty bright out that night. We have since timed it to close an hour after dusk and so far no one has stuck their neck out! thanks for the posts, it was pretty traumatic! She's not my best friend. She follows me everywhere when I let her out of her run.

This is an old thread, but it happened to us tonight. Our door moves very slow. We have the timer set to close at 9. I came home a few minutes after the door closed to find my 8 week old Polish in distress. Her neck was stuck under the door. I've seen them sitting in the doorway in the past. They like to peek out before bed. I can't see this happening once the are full grown.

Hi!  I have two automatic door closers. I LOVE them!! /img/smilies/love.gif

#1, the door closes so slowly that they wouldn't get caught. And if they did, they could just get out from underneath it. My doors are Plexiglass, as they don't want the doors to be too heavy. This summer I am changing out the plexiglass with hardware cloth so air can circulate. I lost two BJG chicks this summer due to a possum getting in when I didn't have the door openers. I was leaving the doors open, but the run was enclosed. Lesson learned quickly /img/smilies/somad.gif  As to one not getting in on time, that DID happen to Rosemary Rock. Once. Never happened again. I do, however, go do a head count every night when I go to the coop to close the gate to the run. I HIGHLY recommend the auto door openers.

One other thing, I work every Friday night 'til 9:00. It's SO nice not having to worry about the doors being closed. I used to ask my husband to close them when he got home, but sometimes he didn't get home 'til late. Then I'd worry. Not anymore!
/img/smilies/love.gif my automatic door openers. If you're interested, give a shout. There are some inexpensive ones, not the $185 ones. I got 2 for approx $80 apiece.

I was wondering where you bought your doors?
