Hello, I'm in middle Tennessee. I am fairly new to raising chickens, I took over someone's old girls last year and rehomed them. I have several baby chicks ordered for the first week of May - they are: Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks, Red Stars, Black Stars, Speckled Sussex, Light Sussex, Golden Comets, Black Australorps, and the option of adding some Rhode Island Reds the day of pick-up. I will have around 30 chicks total. My hen house will be a 16x20 with a run that is 20x20. Does anyone see any problems with the mixing of the breeds I've ordered? I'm not sure about the RIR. I've heard they can be bossy.

Bird personality varies very widely. I have generally found that birds gotten from a hatchery can be more mean spirited and flighty in general than birds bought from a reputable breeder, but that is again a very variable statement. Hatcheries tend not to worry about temperament when breeding, while breeders do. Standard-bred RIR are generally very docile and friendly.

Thank you for your input. Most of my chicks will be coming from my local feed store - a few from nearby breeders. I think I will probably include the RIR. Hopefully everyone will be peace loving and easy going.
