I had a discussion with Mrs Coopscraft this morning about how the roosters seem to be engaging in their own discussions at 3am. I have been brainstorming for a while about noise reduction mensures. Already we have been shutting them in at night but we still hear them in the house. Even the hens do get loud at times. Here are some of my ideas. What do you think?

1) fill the coop walls with gravel and move door and vents so noise gets aimed in a less intrusive direction.

2) put up a privacy fence around the run to direct sound upward.

3) plant tall bushy things around outside the chicken run to absorb sound.

4) I’ve been wanting to build a new bigger coop, so build it in concrete blocks with all the vent space facing away from the house.

I know that rock wool has good sound tampering abilities and provides insulation (double whammy).

Maybe look up the sound damping of gravel and then compare to rock wool.

What about...Put soundproofing material in?

Otherwise I think option 1 seems the best for dampening the sound, but also seems messy and like it could lead to other issues. Hmm.

When I read up on sound barriers the only thing that will help is a tall brick wall, without any spaces, vents, or holes. Some things you mention like plants might do a little bit, but it won't really prevent the noise. A privacy fence will not do much, too many gaps.

Sounds travels in waves. Waves go around things. You would need to prevent the waves from reaching you. Simple as that. You have the right ideas.

Of those choices I’d go toward the plants - trellised plants/ hedge/ etc would cut down the sound by absorbing. Rigid surfaces will likely not work for sound control it will just redirect it elsewhere - ever hear a neighbors dog constantly bark toward a cinder block wall?
