About three months ago, My wife and I went to the local Agway and bought 10 "hens" who were at that time 6 days old. Every day since then, my concerns grow more and more founded that one of them is in fact a rooster. Being that I live in a rather rural area, and that my chickens have the run of an unfenced 120 acres of 1/2 grass 1/2 woodland, I've actually decided that having a rooster around to help protect the hens from foxes, coons, birds of prey and whatever else might rear its ugly head is a good idea.

The suspect chicken is easily 1/3rd again bigger than the next biggest chicken, has tree trunks for legs (comparatively), has a markedly larger and redder comb and beard and has feathers which are more pronounced and shinier than the other three RIRs. It seems to be the leader of the flock and always has its head in the air while the rest of the hens are poking around for whatever tasty morsels they might find. Whenever my wife, daughter, dogs or I get too close, it purposefully positions itself in between the offender and the offended. Do I have a rooster?

I will try to post pictures on my profile as I cannot seem to submit them here.

a pic would help and it its becoming aggressive towards you and your family then it needs to go not only for your safety but for the safety of anyone who comes over. a good rooster will not attack people.
