Conflicting Coop size info

Interesting! I've heard of this occasionally, but mostly the other. Would be interesting to know why.

Thank you all. I was leaning towards a larger coop and you all cemented the decision. It does, however, mean I have to go back to the drawing board, literally. I had amassed most of my materials from the "Habitat For Humanity" restore so I could recycle lumber. I got some 2X4's and a couple 4X8's from the lumber store. Just an FYI, I am part of the FREECYCLE NETWORK here and have acquired an incredible amount of free stuff for the run. I'm an avid recycler and have found great joy out of using others "garbage". I have been kind of afraid to make a bigger coop in fear that I would turn into the "Old lady next door with 100 cats (or chickens in this case)". You know, the one that everyone says "She seemed so normal!". I also fear that my husband may leave me if I add more chicks. Well, at least they will give me eggs. Of course, he's a chef and cooks them for me so I'll have to learn how to cook! God forbid.

I'll post pictures when finished. (If it will ever be finished!)

ddawn: my dogs don't walk on snow either, so I usually have to shovel a path for them to pee. I'm sure my husband won't mind shoveling a path for the girls.

If you can put your coop up on legs/post your chickens will have shade and a area that will get some snow protection and makes your run size larger. I just built 2 coops this way - one is 8x8 and the other is 3'9"x7'9"(was a glass shipping crate) I used 4x4s cut into 2' legs with skid runners under so only used 5 4x4 post for both coops.
