I have 4 chicks, 2 mo. old. 2 are definitely Brahma mixes. I'm pretty sure 1 is a cockerel, because I posted a pic of him a couple of weeks ago, and people told me it was. But I'm confused...

The 2 suspected boys did not feather out on their shoulders and tail until a while after the other 2, which I read is one way to tell gender on Brahmas. Their combs are also growing faster than the other 2. Here's what's got me confused, though. I see no long pointy hackle or saddle feathers anywhere yet. Is 2 mo. too early to start looking for the big boy feathers?

The first one keeps having tail feathers pulled out by my big girls, or it would have more.

Male feathering usually starts to come in around 12 weeks which is when they start puberty.

Oh, ok. I've only had 3 breeds before this. The BO's were not very easy to tell (all ended up being pullets), but the BRs and Wyandottes were pretty easy to tell early. This is a first for me. I'm also curious about the black head on that first guy. I haven't seen many chickens like that. I'm not sure where he got that crazy patterning.

I'm no expert but the first could be silverlaced Wyandotte x an the second looks just like my barred sexlink between my Brahma and French maran
That makes sense. Out of the 12 hatching eggs I had 6 blue, 4 dark brown, the rest were light brown. So that does narrow the field a little on what the mamas might have been.
