Does the nest box have to be up off the floor of the coop? Or can it be floor level but with a board in front to separate it from the coop.

Im worried about going too high with the coop due to winds here.

It doesn't have to be anything special. I have a couple that are floor height with a board separating nest material from coop shavings. I've used a 5 gallon bucket with a hole in the lid.
I prefer a nest about 15-18" above the floor. That way, even if floor bedding is 4-6" deep it is still higher.
That isn't too high, so even if there are baby chicks with a broody, they can hop out and back in.
A hen likes to have a perch in front of an elevated nest so she can peer inside before stepping in.

Ok thanks. I didn't think about the depth of floor covering so thanks thats something else to consider.
