Hi y'all! I finally have my quail in a new, outdoor, quail coop, thanks to my extremely resourceful hubby. (Thanks, sweetie! Love you!) I have 5 quail. Was told they were button quail, but they are larger than the 4" long I've seen described. Mine are averaging about 6" from beak to tail. I have seen the term "Coturnix" applied to the teeny buttons and a larger kind of quail, which I believe mine are.

They crow too...not a wheezy crow like I've seen on Youtube, but rather a trilling kind of crowing.

SOMEONE please tell me what I have! I am very confused.

BTW... the pic on my avatar is about 2 weeks old. This quail is larger now.

If that bird in you avatar is full grown it's either the smallest I've seen a coturnix or it's a button quail. Also known as King quail, CPQ, CBBQ, Blue breasted quail, button quail, and coturnix chinesis. They are the smallest type of quail. They are in the same family as Coturnix quail but not related in any other way that matters.

Most people in the UK and Australia call them King quail, in the US people usually call them button quail (which is inaccurate since there is another bird actually called button quail)

More pictures would help out. Also if they are buttons, what you think is them crowing is just a vocalization. Button quail crowing sounds like wind blowing over a open bottle neck or like a raspy frog croaking. Someone would probably have to show it to you for you to realize it is the males crow.

dc3085: No, that pic was taken about 2 1/2 weeks ago. He has grown. I need two hands now to keep him contained. Tiny is smaller than the others, maybe 6"- the others are 7". They crow more like "kaka..bzzzzzzzzz!"

My biddies are over 6 ounces each, and require two hands. Plus they sound just like that coturnix. So it seems I have Coturnix japonica... Which is fine. :)

But those teeeny little buttons sure are cute cute cute!!!

At 6 oz there is no doubt they are coturnix. They are just from standard stock and have never been bred for size.

In the button video the crowing is the frog like rrrrrrrrooooowwww sound you hear not the loud woo woo woo.
