Hi group,
I run into a problem with my chickens. In my area (Highlands Ranch) I can have 4 chickens but no roosters.
Originally I had a rooster (didn’t expect that but well) which I had to give away because he was so loud. Now I have 4 hens but one of them started to act like a rooster, being loud, screaming, jumping on other hens, very mean. I tried putting the neck bracelet thing on her but it didn’t work. I’m at the end of it. Neighbors are being bothered by it seriously.
I don’t know what to do anymore.. anyone wants that hen if you live outside of town? They are still young, first season, so they just laid few eggs till now. Hen is big and beautiful. Black and white, Blue Jersey Giant.
Any advice will be highly appreciated. Thank you.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens!

Is this Highlands Ranch, Colorado? This forum has active posters from the US and Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, and Australia and New Zealand. (Probably Central and South America, too!)

Often, when chickens are acting up, it’s because there’s some sort of stress going on.
- How big is your coop (where they sleep, maybe hide out from severe weather)? Measure length and width, not including nest boxes; height generally isn’t as big a deal.
- How big is your run (more open area protected from predators)?
- What exactly are they being fed? -brand name of commercial feed with %protein, any treats
- are they able to leave the run to forage in your yard at all? -this is often not possible in city/suburbia/HOA settings.
- how old are they now? Sounds like they’re ~6 months old if they’re starting to lay.

One or more pictures of your setup and any additional descriptions of their lives in general would be very helpful!

Keep a flock forever, but not a chicken that is not working out. Some do not work out in a small coop, others will. Some do not work out without a rooster, some don’t with a rooster.

For whatever reason, she is not working out for you and your set up, sell her. Should get $15-20 for her. A laying hen should be easy to sell. Post at your feed store.

You will enjoy your flock more without her, and the other hens will too.
