confused hen

I got some hens from a neighbor which she said were non-layers. One started laying for me under my care. The other one, I thought she was going broody, her belly was bare, she sat on the nest for hours sometimes, but never steady enough for a broody. Now her belly feathers have grown back. She still sits on the nest for hours at a time, but no eggs, and she is not broody. What's with her?

Sounds to me like she is getting into a zone.. maybe she will start laying on a regular basis...Her hormones could be outta whack too

I just gotta ask this question. Have these hens been exposed to a rooster? Now I know hens don`t need a rooster to lay eggs, but I`ve had a couple hens in my time that just wouldn`t lay. After lots of patience, I put them with a cock. Couple weeks went by, maybe a month on one of them, and both started laying. Now these were both mature hens that had layed, but in both cases, had not layed in over a year. Sorta like priming a pump, I think. I cold be wrong, and yours could be with a cock, but just thought I would throw it out there, since we`re all grasping at straws on this one anyway. Good luck........Pop
