These are beautiful birds! The dark hooded one looks male to me (pretty certain about that.) The other looks like a hen, but my golden hens are a bit different from that one. The other looks like my golden males, however. How old are they? If they're laying, throw a few meal worms (or other treats in there) and the males make this adorable sound to call the hens over.

You're right, I loooove the tidbitting sounds!! (Same behaviour a good chicken rooster does for his hens).

But not just males do it... I've heard (and have on video) my broody coturnix hen do it for her chicks, little "woop woopwoopwoop" sounds and her body trembles as she picks up the food and drops it over and over to say, "look! Look! This is so yummy! Look!"

And the chicks zipped to her like a lightning bolt to get the food she was playing with when they heard the sound.

Also my Golden Girl will tidbit eggs for me when I hand feed them to their group

There are three other females who she ignores and spends most of her day trying to get my attention to "double hand cup snuggle" so yeah... It's crazy but I think she's actually tidbitting for me LOL

And yes she's a girl for sure - she loves making that softly frightening bat screech that quail hens make around egg time haha I love it!!

Aww! Binki...my daughter has several birds (boys and girls) that have bonded with her. It's so adorable! (But I don't think they've tried to feed her. LOL)

Sounds like you've got some gorgeous quail! They can be so sweet. In the absence of a male the top female will call the others over for food too. So cute your girl is doing that to you.

Hehe thanks! She also squats for me making this little sweet tweet like she's getting hurt - it's so cute and creepy at the same time

!

Quail are much more like chickens than I realized, like the tidbitting and squatting. I've only seen quail do the frisky popcorn dance though.. Would love to see a chicken dance out of excitement ha!

The squatting and cheeping is what they do when the roo is mounting them. Yes, they share a lot of similarities with chickens, but I love their popcorning too - so cute! They are just adorably hand sized so super easy for kids to handle. Our kids love them.
