Hi! I'm new to quail after having chickens for many years.
I bought 40 day-old jumbo coturnix chicks- three weeks ago and thought sexing them would be easy by color, but now that they're all feathered out they aren't as clear as I expected. I can identify a decent number that are clearly female, but there aren't any with plain rust chests. Besides maybe one or two that are ALMOST plain rust, the rest have both rust AND dark speckled chests. 🤔

Help a newbie out? I'll post some pics of the confusing ones- there are many, but they're all similar to these.

There aren't a lot of spots, and there is a lot of red. Generally the girls don't have any red at all.

Edit: Also at this age they often have spots that go away as they get older.

Thank you! I want to get rid of most of the boys as soon as I'm sure, but I don't want to accidentally give away hens.

If you’re anywhere near me I’ll take them off your hands. Quail is really good meat. 😉
I'm trying to work up the nerve.
There's zero chance my kids would eat them because they've raised the chicks (and one of my four is a vegetarian), but I do feed my dogs a raw diet...

A year ago I didn't think I could do it. I still don't like doing it, but I do, and I eat them afterwards.
