Great job getting the City of Chesapeake, Virginia to allow up to six penned laying hens in any backyard city-wide!!! Your efforts will no doubt help out those of us in neighboring cities who are hoping for the same thing.

You guys rock - thanks again!!!

Well, it's not quite "any" backyard. It's any single-family residence. And if you have a Homeowners' Association, that still trumps the city's laws, of course. But it was a hard-won victory, and we are proud of it. There's a sunset clause, so our goal now is keep the public educated about chicken-keeping and to work with local government officials to be sure this year goes smoothly.

Two of our members plan to start a South Hampton Roads network for chicken keepers. Groups have sprung up for hens in Portsmouth and Virginia Beach, too, on Facebook. We would like to see Norfolk get an active group going and join the cause. If anyone needs to be put in touch with any of these groups, message me here, or find us on Facebook. If anyone knows of an active group in Norfolk, Virginia, on Facebook or anywhere else, also put us in touch.

Thanks!

A group has been started for Hampton Roads. We are very interested in hearing from folks in Hampton Roads who are interested in raising a small backyard flock. A group has already started for Virginia Beach and for Portsmouth. They will be attending City Council meetings to try and get the ordinances changed, like we did in Chesapeake.

We are interested in hearing from folks in Hampton, Newport News, Suffolk and Norfolk.
