Considering chickens. Want to educate myself and pick the right coop...

Glad to meet you, Shelley. Best wishes with your plans! Good advice about coops. But you can see lots of ideas on this site, and see that people have re-fitted sheds to be coops, or even children's playhouses.

You might consider free ranging after garden season is over, or possibly using some moveable fencing to allow them access to part of your place, but not parts where more delicate plants might be that they could destroy or damage. If you enter "GARDEN" in the search box, you will find a lot of discussions about gardening for chickens, keeping chickens out of gardens, and managing to co-exist with chickens if you care about your garden.

There's a guy in McMinnville that sells small coops that he builds. I can't remember his name but he sells on ebay.
