White rocks are good for a dual purpose type, probably one of the best; but will not be as heavily muscled as the cornish X. YOu can shlow down the cornishX by mananging their feed intake-- don't have food in front of them all the time. Free range them as much as you can to keep them moving. I did this with my broad breasted turkeys and though I have not done it with cornishX myself I have read of others doing this.Oh, thank all for the replies! I'll try to take your advice, and keep an eye out of craigslist. Also, I recently heard that White Rocks are good meat birds. Any input? Also, alot of you seem to have suggested Rangers or Cornish X, so maybe I'll try to order a mix of them and try both for myself![]()
Killing a chicken is not easy if you have not done it before. I learned this year. I struggle with killing those that are injured or sick; and I have to work up to killing for the dinner pot. Can you find someone locally to teach you? Try the feed store for a source. I found I did much better once I had a solid method that was quick.
I have put a number of 5 mo cckl in the freezer; the texture is tougher and more flavorful ( I like this) and they have very little breast meat compared to a roaster from the grocery store. If you want the most bang for your feed dollar buck go cornish X.
