I have a roo that has had a cough/sneeze for about two weeks. At first he had totally normal behavior, watching over the ladies, crowing all day, energetic, etc. Now he sneezes every five minutes, and on Thursday he had stuff fly out his nose/mouth when he sneezed. That was the first time I had seen that. His crow started to be cut-off at the end by a cough or sneeze, too.

A friend said that she was having the same problem and thought it was because of using to much DE and the coop being dusty. DH said that he may have done the same thing. Last weekend I completely cleaned out the coop and put new shavings in. I also put ACV in their water hoping that would help. They get yogurt as a treat every couple days, too. All of his actions have been mostly normal until I saw that stuff fly out his nose when he sneezed the other day, but I haven't seen it since. In the last couple days he has also stopped crowing. He makes a few gurgly sounds in an attempt to crow, but just sounds pretty pathetic.

I have read on the forum NOT to give antibiotics unless there's an injury. I'm assuming this is the case-no antibiotics. This morning we put some electrolytes in his water with the ACV. He's separated from everyone else now and is the saddest rooster I've seen!

Please let me know if there's anything else I can do to help him out...and how long I should expect to keep him in solitary!

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

All you can do is separate him and let nature take its course. If it's just a reaction to way too much dust/DE, it may take a couple days to get that stuff out of his lungs. Provide supportive care, like ACV in the water, scrambled eggs, yogurt for probiotics and watch him for a day or two. If he becomes worse, then you have an illness on your hands for sure, I'd say.

My roo is still coughing. One of my hens is coughing now, too. The roo has started to crow again but is not as robust as normal. Any suggestions on something else to try other than the ACV, scrarmbled eggs and yogurt? Everything else about him is perfect except that darn cough.

Thank you!!!
