One of my chicks Luna is super noisy, just bleating constantly, and I'm not sure why. I don't think it's related to the brooder environment because my other six chicks are fine and they all are eating and drinking, have good-looking poops, etc... The noisy silkie chick seems perfectly healthy too. Definitely eats, drinks, and poops. Not uncoordinated or anything, no reason to suspect illness.

But every once in awhile Luna will start up cheeping loudly (like that WHERE ARE YOU?!? distress cheep) and when I check in the brooder to make sure they're okay, all the chicks are perfectly fine, including Luna. Like she will just be bobbing around eating food just yelling for no apparent reason at all.

Is there anything else I should be considering other than the fact that she might just be a loudmouth? I've had silkies before and they were super quiet birds, so it's kind of surprising to get one that is so noisy. She's the second-smallest chick in the flock and easily the loudest. The chicks have a brooder lamp, it's clean, and I change out food and water a few times a day since I work from home.

Anybody else experience noisy silkies? Should I be expecting a cockerel already?

Baby chicks that are noisily demanding often do have a health issue they're trying to get you to attend to. It's your job to figure out what the problem is, just as with a persistently fussy human infant.

Things it could be include an immature digestive system that isn't processing nutrients efficiently so the chick is hungry feeling and feels chilled. Do you see it hogging the heat source rather than joining the others in racing around the brooder?

It may be constipation. Feel the crop to be sure it's eating and observe the poop. Compared to the other chicks, is it different in some way?

Is the chick as active as the others? Does it find its way to the feeder all right or do the other chicks crowd it away from the feeder?

One of my chicks was peeping nonstop from the post office up until she passed about 40 hours after coming home. Not sure what was up with her but we tried electrolytes and treating for cocci and it didn't work 💔
