So my yellow lab puppy, who has just recently been taken away from his mom, is constantly straining to use the bathroom and I'm pretty sure he's constipated.

I'm about to give him a little milk, and then later after I go to the store I'm gonna give him a little bit of pumpkin. If that doesn't work I guess it's time to talk to a professional

Anything else that may work? I'm not going to give him a laxative, not like a people one anyway. He's small and I'd probably OD him....

I worked as a vet tech for 8+ years. Most of the time dogs do not get constipated unless there is a blockage from eating bones, etc. (even then the stool is usually loose) It is almost always the opposite. You see them out straining and straining trying to go but nothing is coming out... that is because they have diarrhea and still feel the need to "go". It could have been caused by the change in diet. Check to see if it is actually diarrhea and let us know.

It seems a little runny at times, but I just fed him milk and watched him go (yes I realize if the milk is going to do anything it wouldn't have worked that fast lol

) and it was like regular dog poo, but very little of it.

The one time it seemed like water I almost had a heart attack because my last puppy, about a year ago, died from parvo. But it was light orange-ish brown this time, not red.

Before I ever got the puppy a friend of mine was keeping him for me for like 2 days while I got set up for his arrival, and I believe he fed him dog food mixed with milk or water. I'm pretty sure that can't be too good for a small puppy, honestly. He eats puppy chow here.

Edited to say thanks for replying

I've been dealing with this subject too....small world.

Is your puppy eating and drinking well? (ETA-I hadn't read your above post at the time)

You can give dogs mineral oil to help lube their intestines. Check the web for the correct dosage for a puppy, but for adult dogs it's one teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight. That's TEASPOON not tablespoon.

The vet thinks my dog has Hemorrhagic GastroEnteritis however, she did not throw up and she didn't have diarrhea (until I gave her mineral oil)...she was just constipated. ETA-But when she did go there was blood.

That said, the treatment seems to be working but she's on 4 med's: Albon Suspension (antibiotic), Metroidazole (antibiotic), Carafate (stomach protector) and Pepcid (antacid). She has to take them for 7 days.

Hope this info helps.

I just looked at his little behind. He has pasty butt. Like a chick. Seriously though there is dried on poop around his anus, so I'm going back out there with a wet cloth and see what I can do.

And TammyTX, I hope your dog gets better
