My week old bobwhite is constipated so much that her colon is sticking out. She tries to poop, but its painful for her and nothing comes out. What can I do to help her?

We had that problem for almost 2 weeks with one of our chicks; she would cry in pain all day long trying to poo. We would soak her bum in warm water (always making sure to dry her completely) for several minutes. We literally had to massage her rear end to help her go. Separated her from the others and gave her wet food, prune juice, and some canola oil drops (with a dropper). Thankfully she grew out of it.

ETA: lots of vaseline on the vent and surrounding area helped too.

Good luck and I hope she gets better :fl

Thank you so much for your help. How did you dry her? My baby looks wet still (he's not). His down didnt re-fluff.

We just moistened some of her feed with water. Gave her a little mashed up banana.

And to dry her, we just towel dried her as best we could then just held her. She got held, A LOT. but I did read using a hair drier (if the sound didn't terrify them) was an option.

For a while she was failing to thrive, and is much smaller than one of the birds her age. But we constantly had to make sure she was drinking water.

When I went to check on him, he was gone :( RIP to my little buddy. Thank you for your help, regardless. <3
