i think my broody silkie chicken is constipated because she took a long time to poo today and she cried in pain.

what can i give her to help. i think it is because she only gets off her eggs once a day to eat drink and dust bath and only for 10 mins.

i'm worried about her because they hatch in 3 days !!!!

HELP !!!!!!!!!

A little oil could help. I'd also recommend probiotics (yogurt for example) to help her gut a bit. It's not unusual for broodies to have humongous droppings when they're busy.

As a side note, I remember when my first broody of adulthood ("Blackie" - a very creatively named black cochin) laid her first dropping that the family thereafter called "the holy hand grenade" in honor of Monty Python. The reason it was so named was two-fold. First, it was about the size and shape of a handgrenade (which was quite alarming considering she was a bantam). But most importantly because when my mom broke it open (she was chicken-sitting) to make sure the bird was ok, it literally ran her out of the room - it was that stinky!

So don't break them open! And pity her. After laying all those eggs, she lays something about the same size. Ouch.

Are you all ready for the biddies yet?

i will try the oil & yoghurt. i really think it is because she is just sooooo keen to hatch these eggs she will kill herself to do it!!!!

She has been doing very big poos but today she just couldn't go then it was a little drop so it made me worry.

we have a brooder ready now & have decided to keep it with the mum outside in there coop. i am going to put a light in with them ..... could the chickens catch on fire????

it is just Geraldine being a silkie is soooo fluffy ??

How about juicy treats like watermelon? Not too much though. Maybe a piece the size of a quarter 2 or three times a day. You don't want to give her diarrhea. She might be dehydrated and the watermelon would be a good way to get her extra fluids.

that is a great idea. she only drinks once a day even though i put water right beside her so she prob really needs the mellon

thank you all so much

I am working so much i have not been over to see her today. she lives with my boy friend. he said she came down and went to the toilet. but he has not given her anything he is waiting for me to come tomorrow. i am a little ticked he can't do anything himself!!! & i work so much!!!

i will have to work out how to put picture on here!!! I hope they hatch on sunday that will be 21 days. could they be late?
