Constructing a run that is 6' tall?

We are using 7 ft tall metal stakes (the kind used for pasters), they run about $5.50 each at Lowes. If you want to use the small wire on the bottom about 2-4 ft tall (I'm thinking rabbit cage wiring) and then utility fencing on the last few feet and the roof (a full grown chicken shouldn't be able to get thru that). You could also use OSB board for the roof, be sure to paint it with an outdoor paint (you can pick up reject cans that came out the wrong color for about $5 or so).

Loooove my chainlink. Easy to move around and reconfigure. The 4' tall runs are perfect for the silkies. Can get used 10X10 for $50, if you watch. These also usually come with a shade cloth that I tie to the top. And, I line it with chicken wire, attaching it with hog rings (the wire is also buried.) We have the usual urban predators, and last summer, it kept the mink out (a peta idiot turned thousands of mink loose.....many of which were killed on the highways.)

*But, I would love a timber/welded wire fortress, too!

I built the fence with 4"x4" posts , 4' hardware cloth going 10" below grade and toed 2" out. 2"x4"s and 1" poultry mesh up and over the run. I made mine 8' tall to go above the windows on the side of the house, so I can eaisly walk inside, I'm 6'2".

I faced the pressure treated wood with reclaimed fence wood at chicken height or lower so they dont peck at the chem. stuff.

Our run is a 6 x 14 x 6' tall dog kennel. The first one we got actually my DH found on the side of the road free- COMPLETE. I am going to pick another one up tomorrow that I found on Craigslist. They wanted $150 but since I will get it right away they went down to $125. I will then use tomato cage (2"x3" openings) to cover the top as we have a hawk, coyote, neighboring dog problems. The dog kennels are great because they come with all the upright supports and are very sturdy - if they are meant to keep dogs in then they should be able to keep them out too! Good luck!

I thik 1x3" is really big a lot of preditors can squizeinto it, I think 1X2 or even 1X1 if you can afford it will be better, here are some pictures of my run
