I have recently aquired some chickens. Want to partition part of my garden
shed off to make a coop for them. The flooring in that shed is particle board.
What to do I do to make the area that I am using for the coop water resistant
and treated so wood will not rot. Thought about using a coat of poly urthene
and then cover with black heavy grade plastic stapled to the flooring....
any suggestions?

Rhino liner or something similar. Walmart carriers their own brand and for 1 gallon its like $45 (at least in my area). I've personally asked Rhino liner if it is safe on wood and for animals and they said yes on both counts.
I'm planning on using it on my coop floor this winter/spring when I do my semi-annual coop cleaning.

Would that be enough or do I need to also use the heavy plastic?
Want to be able to use a shovel or rake to clean out all shavings
and put in new. Thought maybe the plastic might tear with the
scraping.....Rhino liner huh? Will ask at our Walmart here in
the Atlanta, Georgia area. Thanks

I contacted Walmart about their Rustoleum product for bed liner application which is the brand they carry.
Rhino Liner also.....was told this product was not suitable for application on wooden floor of chicken coop.
Sooo....am going to speak to people at Home Depot and Lowe's and see what they recommend. Was
thinking along the lines of a polyurethane varnish or marine varnish. Something that is made for wood.
Just thought I would pass along what information that I gathered.

I used a rubberized roof coat product I got from Lowes. Blackjack#57. I've had the stuff on my coop's floor for over two yrs and it looks as good as the day I put it down. You get 5gals for under $50, that beats the he!! out of $45 for only a gallon.

That sounds better expense wise for sure. Is it safe for animals to be on it......guess
so if you have used it for two years. Thanks for the info....will check with Lowe's.
Appreciate it.

You can also use a product called Hydroban. Its used on shower walls before applying tile. I just finished coating my floor in my coop currently under construction. See the post about "The Pantry" (Another Wacky Coop) on this site and you can see the pictures. Lowes and Home Depot carry similar products in the tile section. They run about $50 a gallon. A gallon goes a long way.

Okay, another good idea. I shall check out your post in The Pantry "Wacky Coop" and see the
pictures. I will be at Lowe's anyway, so will check out both products. The area that I will be sealing is about 5x12 so this should be plenty? This is more expensive than the roof coating but thanks for the ideas............
