Construction question - adding ventilation

If you decide to drill a hole to get the reciprocating saw in be darn sure there are no nails in that area.

Yes, I'd also at least consider alternatives. I'd always rather cut plain wood than mess with nails. If you just cut parts of the siding out, would it still be high enough above your roosts? Are your overhangs large enough that it would still be sheltered? Or how about the gable ends - put in big hardware-cloth windows, maybe with louvers or add an awning if there will be a problem with wet coming in? If that works, it could mean just a couple of cut-outs instead of fighting to remove a whole bunch of nailed-in blocking.
