Yes, I'd also at least consider alternatives. I'd always rather cut plain wood than mess with nails. If you just cut parts of the siding out, would it still be high enough above your roosts? Are your overhangs large enough that it would still be sheltered? Or how about the gable ends - put in big hardware-cloth windows, maybe with louvers or add an awning if there will be a problem with wet coming in? If that works, it could mean just a couple of cut-outs instead of fighting to remove a whole bunch of nailed-in blocking.. . . Pics of the outside please. There may be other options for venting.
