Hello! My daughter and I are starting to research raising chickens. We are just getting started and wanted to know who is in the chicken raising community in El Cerrito CA? We are also wondering what people do when they go out of town? Are backyard chickens ok on their own for 1-2 weeks given plenty of food and water? I would think someone needs to check in on them every 3 days or so. What do people do when they have 4-6 wk old chicks still in the brooder and you have to be away? We rarely go away but may have a trip to make in the Fall. I appreciate anyone's suggestions!

Oh, and one more questions - where is the best local place to get the chicks? And feed? Thanks to all!
Planning on 2 RI Reds, 1 Amercauna, 1 Barred or white Plymouth Rock - but open to suggestions

from NW Tennessee...

Chickens should be checked on daily (IMO)... if you leave town frequently, you need to find a chicken savy person to look after them.
I check on mine 2-3x a day at a minimum.

You should be able to find chicks at your local farm store (may not have any this time of year) .. you can look on Craigslist, find someone local, even order them from a hatchery.

Feed can be found at your local farm store.

from Louisiana!

You find someone to check on them everyday.

No, you can't leave them for 1-2 weeks with out checking on them!

You get someone to check on them. Or you don't get chicks when you know you'll be going out of town when their still young!

Feed store!!
