CONTEST SITE!!!!!Updated -M. McMURRAY $25 Results Posted Friday Noon ?

Ok, the only one that could be considered black with a rose comb is number 5, and I don't think that's a Sumatra. I stand by my answer on my entires for that one.

I don't see anything in your blacks that could be Sumatra.

According to BYC's Breed page, Sumatras have yellow soles and a pea comb. Sorry, Quail_Antwerp.

What's the difference?

you're correct, my mistake, pea comb. I always get rose and pea combs confused. Pea combs I think are smaller than Rose combs, but we need to ask someone who knows more about that than me.

OK I googled and found this information on pea combs and rose combs

The Pea is a medium length, low comb, the top of which is marked with three low lengthwise ridges, the center one is slightly higher that the outer ones. The outer ones are either undulated or marked with small rounded serrations. This is a breed characteristic that is found in Brahmas, Buckeyes, Cornish, Cubalayas and Sumatras.

The Rose is a solid, broad, nearly flat on top, low, fleshly comb that terminates in a well-developed tapering spike. It may turn upward as in Hamburgs, be nearly horizontal as in Rose Comb Leghorns, or follow the contour of the head as in Wyandottes. The top surface of the main part should be slightly convex and studded with small rounded protuberances. The general shape varies in the different breeds.

So did anyone guess Egyptian Fayamois for the little black and white ones? I sure would like to find out. When is it that we find out the breeds?

I am only on the computer a little bit each day

I think red stars would be buff/red with some white or black flecks,,,,

New Hampshires orange with some black maybe

RIR would be maroon colored. RIRs should have black in their tails, but who knows.

I dont think any of those black birds are Sumatras IMO

This really shouldn't be so hard. But I want to be as fair as possible. I am going to call a few of them simply ? Gender. Or any of two breeds (as in the case of a few reds)

And I am simply having trouble calling some yellow soled blacks Jersey Giants if they are among the smallest of the blacks. But I can't figure out another McMurray Black that would fit. Any ideas

I will have the list ready by noon. But I may still need to figure out a couple of them. Some people submitted in a form that didn't transfer to a spreadsheet very well, and I am making sure to double and triple check so I don't mess this up. It would be awful to announce the wrong winner.... Yikes! I would be kicked off of BYC, or would have to hide for a year at least.

I have had some trouble focusing on the task this AM, but have had my coffee now and am 100% on it. Sorry it is taking so long.

Back soon!

Jersey Giants actually mature rather slowly, since your chickens are still young, the smaller ones could be JG. I know my JG is just now a little bigger than my BO and they are almost 5 months old.

Yep - I'm sure your blacks are either black jersey giants or black australorps - comb comb, leg color, & body type, but it was hard to try to figure out which was which because we couldn't see the feet. I think the only way for you to identify them at this age is for you to check their feet - their size won't be much different at 8 weeks of age.
You may find out later, that you were wrong on a couple because hatchery stock doesn't always follow the rules.

New Hampshire Reds are lighter (more golden) than Rhode Island Reds/Production reds.
