And my son just informed me that he has chased off the great horned owl from my lower pasture yet again for the 3rd time this week!!! She didn't get any chickens this time but man do they freeze and hide when she comes
Around.... So hen collecting manually tonight as no one will perch on their own!!

Oh no! I am always afraid of owls and hawks getting my birds!

OK I got this one.... WORST HATCH EVER!

Last spring after I got my Lavender and Black Ameraucanas I was hatching EVERY EGG they laid.... I was selling half the flock and wanted to get a head start on hatching. ANY WHO..... incubation was fine, lockdown was fine. I had almost 100% hatch. I had 3-4 Lavender (VERY needed at the time) some splits and some SBEL. 19 chicks total. Beautiful and healthy everyone! SO HAPPY with myself. So I left them in the hatcher over night so everyone could fluff up and dry. The next morning I came in to the HORROR..... the Water Heater Thermostat lost its mind and it was 113 degrees... ALL DEAD

I was CRUSHED.... I told my hubby out side because we had been talking about how good a hatch it was and how I really needed the chicks to start my flocks...... Hubby started laughing.... He did not believe me

To this day I will NEVER USE another WHT again. I bought Digital thermostats for EVERYTHING and even have extras just in case I need them.

This happened early in my hatching experiences... VERY DISHEARTENING ..... I was panicked about the other eggs till I got the new thermostats. Never had another hatch of that many Lavs till my Splits started to lay

really set my breeding way back.

I have NEVER LOST a chick to that problems since.
