Hi All,

I put a yard of sand down as the base under my coop/run. My chicks aren't ready for outside living yet at just a week old, but I plan on taking them into the run from time to time (starting in about a week) to play around and get fresh air. Knowing that contractor sand can be eaten and used as grit, do you think I'll need to give them chick grit in addition? When they're outside for their visits in the run I was planning on introducing some new foods (currently only eating crumbles) and want to make sure they can digest what I give them.

Any thoughts on a need for grit in the situation I'm describing?

Thanks for the replies!

I personally never provide grit to chicks, and if I do it's some sand. I haven't had any troubles with them eating it and they seem quite excited for a dish of sand to goof around in.

Cool thanks. I'll probably give them something like fruit in the run to peck at and they can eat/play in all the sand they want.
