Let me preface this by saying I"m barely literate in electronic gizmos.

Yesterday I thought I was having a private conversation with another member when I "start conversation" with a member from their profile page. Not so, as it ended up on a thread we had been on.

I searched for "PM" in search mode and I looked in the troubleshooting guides and could not come up with an answer. Sooo what is the difference and how do I message someone privately. Thanks folks.

If you click the start a conversation button, the conversation should only be visible to you, and the member(s) you selected to be participants.

You can also send a private message (a PM), by clicking on the little envelope at the top of your screen. You can see it between my member name and #alerts in the below example:

Clicking on the envelope will give you the option to start a new private conversation between you and whomever you include.

They'll still be referenced as a conversation, though. Forum software in the past used to call them private messages, and they used to be sent as messages that weren't constrained to a single conversation, if that makes sense, but the way XF does it is better for group conversations.

OMG I opened up mail icon and missed the start conversation. I need to pay attention better.
