Hey all! :)

We have chicks that are roughly 3 weeks for most of them and one little girl who is 4.5ish weeks. We are thinking of buying a metal shed 6ft by 5ft and converting it to a coop. We live in Indiana...about 40 minutes south of Indianapolis. It doesn't get SUPER hot or SUPER cold very often so, I think with proper ventilation, it could work? What should we use for the flooring? That is the only big thing we are stumped on! Anyone do this before? Thanks!

Yes it will work with the proper modifications. There are a lot of threads on this topic, I recommend doing an advanced search for "metal shed" and limiting the results to only the this forum (Coop & Run - Design, Construction, & Maintenance). That will give you a day of reading which will provide you everything you need to know about setting the shed up as a coop :)

Then...the floor, concrete is probably the best option for a permanent structure. I have a shed with a wood floor sitting on 6x6s, so that works too, but I don't have chickens or food in there so nothing has tried to chew through the wood. You could also just set the shed on the ground with no floor.

It really comes down to preference and money. Concrete is easy to clean, maintain, and provides the best protection from predators and elements. It's also the most expensive. Anything else will be less expensive but lack in one of those areas.

Good luck!
