I'm not allowed to keep roosters in my city and my surprise cockerel is starting to find his voice and is likely gonna have to go soon. I have a friend that's allowed to keep roosters and is willing to take him, and he completely free ranges his flock and only provides chicken feed for them in the winter. My only concern is if my cockerel is used to getting as much feed as he wants from a trough is he gonna have a hard time learning to get almost all his food by foraging?

I'm also wondering about the other way around, in case I ever want to buy chickens that were previously free ranged. Are they gonna have a hard time converting?

I would think the transplanted boy would find what he needs to eat in the free range situation.

Going the other way, from being used to free ranging to staying in a run...just going by the birds I've raised, once they're used to free ranging they can get pretty vocal about being stuck inside a run
