I have a 24 X 36 detached garage, divided down the middle lengthwise. One half is my workshop. It has a ceiling and a window AC. The other side is tractor and mower storage. I am in the process of building an indoor coop in the back corner of that side. Pop door in the back wall goes out into the current chicken yard. I plan to fence off part of it for the chicks. I have seven 2 year old hens and seven six week old chicks. The chicks are currently in a 3 x 6 cage in the workshop. They were in the other side, but it just got TOO HOT for them, so I moved them after a few days. There is no ceiling in tractor side. There is a continuous ridge vent and full length soffit vents on both sides. Unless the big garage doors are open, there is very little air movement. I can't leave the big doors open when I am not home---too many expensive tools in the workshop and no way to lock it separately. I bought two of those twin window fans and set them up, blowing in. It didn't do much good. It was 90 outside today, and 96 inside there. I try to work out there and usually have to quit by noon because of the heat. I'm afraid the chicks will suffer too much. There is no shade in their part of the yard either. I bought a 10 X 10 kennel shade cloth, and will put it up before I let them out there. There is not room in the old coop for this many birds. I also don't know how to handle the feed problem---not letting the chicks get layer feed. Oy! I am stumped. I bought a roof turbine (wind activated), and will put it up as soon as I can. The roofing guy wants $225 to do it. The thing only cost $35, so I think I will do it myself although I am not crazy about getting up on the roof. (I am a 68 year old female). Any suggestions? Or do I give over my air conditioned workshop to the chicks until fall? NOT!

Sorry this is so long!

The wind powered vent should be a big help especially with the fans forcing air into the space. Your right about 225 being too much for installing it. You may be able to advertise on craigslist for a handyman that could do it much cheaper. It shouldn't cost more than 100 bucks. It will only take someone about an hour to do the job. Good Luck
